 What is your occupation?
Registered Nurse

How long have you been coming to Saco Sports & Fitness?
 Since November 07

What made you decide to start coming?
I am a breast cancer survivor, diagnosed at age 39. I survived the ups and downs of chemotherapy and many reconstructive surgeries. I beat cancer yet I was not able to beat my lifelong struggle with the scale. I've been a yo-yo dieter since I was 2 yeas old, or so it feels! I had grown passive. I would think of being skinny and think of exercising, yet I'd sit on the couch and eat cake. It was time to conquer the fat! It was time to be a weight loss survivor.

Have you been able to reach your goals?
I have reached many mini goals with my ultimate weight loss goal still in sight. I've dropped 5 pants sizes and a total of 64lbs. are gone. My last 15 lbs. and 6 inches from my waist and hips (6.8% body fat) have been lost since joining the gym.

If yes, how did you accomplish that and did have help and/or support?
My weight loss began, as always, with a fad diet, did some Atkins, did some Fat Smash. I knew I had to skip the term "diet" and just eat healthy and incorporate exercise. I came to Saco Sport & Fitness with clear goals in mind: weight loss, weight management, and muscle building. I was hooked up with Linda Burgess, Master Trainer. It has been an excellent match. I am losing weight, eating healthier, and working out weekly with Linda to build muscle. Oh, and I couldn't have lost weight without Spinning. Spinning's the bomb!

What are your health/fitness plans for the future?
I want to be whole, mind and body, Where my weight is no longer an issue, where food is used to fuel my body, not used as my vice. I want to pose with my new body and show women with breast cancer that life and beauty is possible after the valiant struggle to survive. I plan to continue with my workouts until my goals have been obtained.

How long have you been coming to Saco Sports & Fitness?
Steadily for the past 2 years

What made you decide to start coming?
I have had seven(7) back and neck surgeries. I was in chronic pain and out of shape. My husband, John, gave me a Personal Training package with Don Bouchard in June 2005.

Have you been able to reach your goals?
Yes, I’ve lost 23 pounds and 21.25 inches to date.

If yes, how did you accomplish that and did have help and/or support?
I accomplished more than I ever thought possible. I started not being able to do 5 sit ups. With the Training and Don’s continued support and motivation, I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in and I can do more physically and am pain free most days.

What are your health/fitness plans for the future?
To continue to train with weights, spin, road ride, and fitness is now a part of my lifestyle.

What made you decide to start coming?
After pretty much a lifelong struggle with my weight and failed attempts at just about every weight loss program imaginable, the realization of the morbid impact obesity was having on my health set in. I sought out professional advice in September 2002.  After consulting with my physician and another specialist, the prognosis was not good. The recommended treatment plan was as follows: mental and nutritional counseling, bar iatric surgery and a physical fitness program. Thus my journey began, and as I maneuvered through the obstacle course of bureaucracy, I continued my journey fighting the good fight and setting a goal to be fit and healthy. On October 3rd, 2006 I underwent gastric bypass surgery and upon receiving medical clearance joined the Lifeline program at University of Southern Maine.

Have you been able to reach your goals?
Upon admission to the hospital for my surgery, I tipped the scale at 393lbs. I have since have lost over 170lbs, over 50 inches, and have realized marked improvement in my health and physical condition. I am close to my goal and hope to achieve it in the next 6 months. In reality my goal is for a lifetime being fit, healthy and happy!

If yes, how did you accomplish that and did have help and/or support?
I have always had the support and encouragement of my family and friends in all of my life’s endeavors. My good friend, Anne Maragus, nominated me for a First Responder Fitness Scholarship at Saco Sport & Fitness. Owner, Scott Gillespie welcomed me in August 2006 and I began my program with Personal Trainer Heather Nutting who has been an inspiration and motivator for me. The dialogue we share and the bond we have made will forever be a part of me. Working out has enhanced my ability as a first responder and have a more positive outlook on life.

What are your health/fitness plans for the future?
I have made a promise to myself to make fitness and healthy habits a part of my daily routine. Setting goals that are measurable and realistic are essential in realizing this. Being one of French/Greek decent, enjoying cooking, good eats, and drink within due bounds is my greatest challenge. I continually say, “If I keep working at this and want it badly enough, I can have it”.

What made you decide to start coming?
I moved to Saco in May ’06 and had been a member at Lifestyle but I wanted a gym closer to home and I liked the SSF atmosphere.  Plus, after a summer of slacking, I needed to get back in the habit.

Have you been able to reach your goals?
I reached one goal on December 22 – to look noticeably more fit at my dad’s wedding.  But I’ve set a new goal now that I know I can do it!  So far, I’ve lost 10 lbs and gone down a size.

If yes, how did you accomplish that and did have help and/or support?
I decided to hire a trainer because I never had one before and I was hoping a coach could help me reach my goals and keep me focused.  I HIGHLY recommend trainers for anyone else struggling with health and fitness goals.  Linda has me pegged; she keeps me honest and she’s the second one (after me!) to celebrate my accomplishments.  I know I did all the heavy lifting and the sweating, but Linda’s support motivates me and keeps me on the right track.

What are your health/fitness plans for the future?
I’ll continue my gym habit, especially step classes.  Also, I’m working on building a tolerance for running, and I’ve registered to run in the Kerrymen Pub 5K on March 11, so now I have something tangible to work toward.  I’m also focusing on maintaining healthy eating habits and making good choices.

What made you decide to start coming?
I started coming to Saco Sport & Fitness after moving to Buxton.

I worked out most of my life. But it has only been recently that I have taken it seriously.

Have you been able to reach your goals?
Yes. I weighed 216lbs. Now I weigh between 182-186. (I lost over 30 lbs.)

If yes, how did you accomplish that and did have help and/or support?
I worked out 6-7 days a week and ate right. From Sunday, January 15th through

April 24th (100 days straight) I worked out in some way. Cardio is key.

I weigh myself every day, to keep on track, and I write down almost everything that I eat or drink.

What are your health/fitness plans for the future?
I will, God permitting, workout and eat as healthy as possible for

 the rest of my life

How long have you been coming to
Saco Sports & Fitness?
Since day 1

What made you decide to start coming?
I originally started coming back when it was New England Health and Racquet to play Racquetball. Back then I wasn’t coming very often.

Have you been able to reach your goals?
Yes

If yes, how did you accomplish that and did have help and/or support?
Well, my goal was set just over 4 years ago after getting back from a trip to the Bahamas. See, what happened was my friend took a few candid photos of me swimming in the ocean. I could not believe the size that I had reached. So I went back to the gym and stepped on the scale. I was 340lbs. What a shock. That day I set a goal that I would get down to 200 lbs. I started coming to the club just about every day and gave up 2 things: soft drinks and ice cream. I know this doesn’t sound like much, but I was drinking 12-14 cans/day and not missing very many days with ice cream either. With this change I lost 70lbs. the first year. After that, it got a lot harder to continue to lose the weight. So I got a Personal Trainer, Scott Fleurant. Over the next year and a lot more changes to my eating habits, I lost another 30 lbs. Scott introduced me to interval training and I increased my cardio from 30 min. to 1.5 hours/day. This has gotten my to where I am today, between 185 and 190 lbs. Now the big question is cam I maintain this for the long haul? We shall see.

What are your health/fitness plans for the future?
I plan on getting back to lifting to tone and build a little. Most likely train with Scott again to revise my workout and keep me motivated.

How long have you been coming to
Saco Sports & Fitness?
Approximately 8 years

What made you decide to start coming?
My son wanted to work out and wanted company, so I decided to tag along.

Have you been able to reach your goals?
Not full, although I have lost 200lbs. I still want to lose an additional 15lbs. My experience has been that weight loss is easy; it is keeping it off that is the difficult task. When people say that you have to change your lifestyle, it is accurate. I have been able to change my lifestyle so that I try to do things in moderation. I eat out daily and I eat at least five meals a week at McDonald’s. It can be done by thinking about what you are eating, balancing your intake of calories, and exercise.

If yes, how did you accomplish that and did have help and/or support?
I have accomplished what I have through nutrition and exercise (both cardio and resistance). I had the help of different Trainers here at Saco Sport & Fitness and my family, especially my wife Anne.

What are your health/fitness plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to lose an additional 15lbs. and then have some cosmetic surgery. I’d also like to speak on exercise and nutrition and possibly become a Personal Trainer.

How long have you been coming to
Saco Sports & Fitness?
Since November 2004

What made you decide to start coming?
A friend of mine, Elaine, had recently joined. She inspired me to actually pick up the phone and inquire about it. After taking that first step, I realized it would be a good thing to do. I wanted to feel healthy and have a lot more energy. Plus, the fact that I had recently gone through seeing my mother diagnosed with diabetes, what it did to her, and that I was a prime candidate for it also.

Have you been able to reach your goals?
Yes. I have set several small goals on the way to reaching my ultimate weight goal. As of February 15th, I have lost 90 pounds. The knowledge I have gained has helped to change my lifestyle to a much healthier one.

If yes, how did you accomplish that and did have help and/or support?
On November 9th, 2004  I joined Saco Sport & Fitness. Scott Fleurant, a Personal trainer there, was instrumental insetting up a workout routine and Weight Watchers. Linda Burgess, a Personal Trainer at Saco Sport & Fitness, was instrumental in setting up a workout routine for me. I have been working with Scott since then. Scott has been encouraging, motivating, and supportive every step of the way. Between my friends and Scott, They have all been there for me along the way. Thank you Scott and thank you to all my friends who have me along the way.

What are your health/fitness plans for the future?
I plan to continue working toward my ultimate goal and, once I am there, maintain that. Going to the gym now has just become a part of my day. One that I actually enjoy. With the change in my lifestyle, it has made such a difference in the way that I feel and look that there is no going back now – just forward!

How long have you been coming to

Since July 2005

What made you decide to start coming?
My brother, Brian Staples (a former employee of Saco Sport & Fitness), was a great encouragement to me. He finally convinced me to come in and check things out. Also, the size of my clothing was a catalyst.

Have you been able to reach your goals?
I have met several small goals and am well on my way to meeting my next fitness goal.  As of January1st 2006 I have lost 70 lbs and gained invaluable information. It helps me to lead a more healthy and active lifestyle.

If yes, how did you accomplish that and did have help and/or support?
On July 1st, 2005 I joined Saco Sport & Fitness and Weight Watchers. Linda Burgess, a Personal Trainer at Saco Sport & Fitness, was instrumental in setting up a workout routine for me. I followed it religiously for 4 months. At that point, I had plateaued  and my brother recommended signing up with a Personal Trainer. In November, I began working with Scott Fleurant and he has helped to bring me to the next level in weight training. Of course my friends and family have been very supportive as well.

What are your health/fitness plans for the future?
I plan to continue working with a Trainer because I like having my weight routine changed and I am more challenged by the varying regimen. I have recently tried a group exercise class, Taekwonics, and love it. I hope to try a few more classes at some point. Watch out Ms. Olympia, here I come.
