Did you hear about the possible sales tax on your membership?
The Governor wants to add a new sales tax to fitness club memberships! We see this as unnecessary and even harmful to our efforts to promote overall wellness and fitness.
This past week, the Governor released his revised 2018-2019 state budget, updating his previous budget proposal from January. Much to our disappointment, this proposal again includes a new sales tax on health club/fitness membership even after all your emails and phone calls trying to get it removed. The taxation committee recently recommended in a 7 to 5 vote against the Governor’s plan to expand the sales tax for this purpose.
Thank you for those of you who contacted their legislators and we must continue our advocacy efforts in order to prevent this new tax on our health.
How can I help oppose this new tax?
If you want to help us oppose this unnecessary and harmful tax expansion on your club memberships, please send an email to the following legislators on the Appropriations Committee telling them you OPPOSE taxing your health…
Senator James M. Hamper (R-Oxford), Chair
Senator Roger J. Katz (R-Kennebec)
Senator Catherine E. Breen (D-Cumberland)
Representative Drew Gattine (D-Westbrook), Chair
Representative John L. Martin (D-Eagle Lake)
Representative Aaron M. Frey (D-Bangor)
Representative Erik C. Jorgensen (D-Portland)
Representative Brian L. Hubbell (D-Bar Harbor)
Representative Denise A. Tepler (D-Topsham)
Representative Tom J. Winsor (R-Norway)
